Music Dept.

In the local area, the school's Swing Band is very well known. The band can be seen at school concerts and have even gone to places such as Disneyland Paris to perform for visitors. The school's wind band (wind instruments) have toured as well.

Other bands include the Wind Band, Jazz Band, Voice Squad which is choir of about 60-100 pupils, Samba Band, Close Harmony which is a choir of about 10-20 pupils, and the school Orchestra. There are also smaller groups that consist of small numbers of pupils, such as Sax Group, Floboe which is a group of flutes and oboes.

Two concerts each year are hosted by the School Captains.

Captains

The 'Captain' system is unique to the school. Once students enter Year 10 they are given the choice to apply to be a Form or Sports Captain. Form Captains are a post of responsibility that are given to responsible students. Their role includes looking after and mentoring younger students, arranging activities and helping at extra curricular events. Sports Captains arrange sporting activities for the rest of the students in the school. Out of those who apply, two students are offered the post of School Captain; the equivalent of Head Boy and Girl. The post includes arranging the Form/Sports Captains, mentoring younger students and representing the school at various events and functions. Music Captains help manage the Music Department, organising recitals, helping to run clubs and inter-school activities, as well and helping to set up and run the Music Concerts. There are now also Junior Sports Captains.

School Productions

In the local area, the school is renowned for its productions which are performed every year in February. Productions have been running for a large number of years. Productions in the past have included West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, Grease, The Sound of Music, Bugsy Malone and February 2011's production of Oliver.

Awards

Before the school breaks up for the Easter Holidays, the school holds an awards ceremony during the End of Term Assembly, giving out many awards for outstanding achievement during the year. These awards mostly go to Year Eleven students who leave to begin study leave at this point. Awards include Academic Honours in particular subjects, the Bayliss Award for Drama, the Lady Burton Cup for Outstanding Individual Achievement and the School English Award for excellent Achievement in English.

Sixth form

The school does not have a sixth form attached to it. Because of this the large majority of students that want to pursue Further Education continue to Colchester Sixth Form College, Northgate Sixth Form, Colchester Royal Grammar School, Suffolk New College or Suffolk One
